The Desert Fruit Company is a cooperatively owned, worker run, Australian date farm. We are located south east of Alice Springs just shy of the edge of the Simpson Desert. Tamara Plantation was established in 1991.  Since 2014, the farm has been managed by members of the Co-operative.  Workers receive an hourly wage for their labour with any profits being re-invested

Did you know?

The co-op has just over 100 products, and 40 are from Tasmania, 46 from Mainland Australia and only 15 are from overseas!
Tasmanian products include:
Laundry powder, Whole walnuts, Sauerkraut, Quinoa, preserves from dedicated growers, olive oil, oats, linseed, honey and all our local fruit and vegetables for the co-op farmers Market.

Seedlings now available at the Co-Op!

Seedlings come in punnets of 8 individual plugs and are $3.50 per punnet  or $3 each if 4 or more punnets are purchased.

We also have in stock :

  •  'Potent Pony Poo'          $ 2.50 each
  • Compost hay/poo bag   $ 2.50 each
  • Mushroom compost   $ 4.50
  • Seed packets $3.00 or 10 for $25

Opening hours…

Our recent survey showed that the majority of members prefer the extra trading hours to extend on Saturdays. From the first week of October, Saturday trading hours are from 9.30 am-12.30 pm. The Co-Op is also still open from 2.30 pm-5.00 pm on Fridays. We hope you continue to enjoy our Food Co-Op.

Vege Seedlings for sale – last chance to plant……….

We're getting towards the time for latest plantings of most things* before daylight hours get too short. We still have some good strong seedlings left (sown in mid-Feb), but they will need to get in the ground in the next week or two. They will be on sale to the public at the co-op (as a fundraiser for Channel Living) at the following times:

New Food Co-op and HQ

Channel Living is excited to announce the launch of our new Food Co-op and Headquarters, which will also be home of the Vege Boxes!

Thanks to dozens of hours of volunteer time, our new venue at the “old Woodbridge Service Station” is almost ready and Council have provided us with our Change of Use permit.

Launch of new Co-op imminent

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Council has issued us with our permit for Change of Use of the service station shopfront, so we will be moving into the new shop next week.
